Feed Grade vs. Food Grade: What’s the Difference?

Table of Contents

When handling agricultural commodities, powders, grains, additives, or processed ingredients, choosing the right FIBC bulk bag is crucial for maintaining product safety and compliance. Two of the most commonly confused classifications are Feed Grade and Food Grade – and while they may sound similar, the standards, handling requirements, and packaging specifications differ significantly.

Understanding these differences ensures that you source the right bag that meets regulatory requirements, protects product quality, and aligns with your industry’s hygiene standards.

At Anita Plastics, we manufacture Feed Grade and Food Grade FIBC bags, produced in controlled environments and customized to meet industry-specific handling and safety requirements.

What Is Feed Grade?

Feed Grade products are intended for animal consumption, including:

  • Animal feed
  • Additives
  • Pet food ingredients
  • Seed mixes
  • Nutritional supplements for livestock

Feed Grade materials must be clean, uncontaminated, and safe, but they do not require the same strict hygiene standards as Food Grade products.

Key Requirements of Feed Grade FIBCs

  • Made from virgin PP or high-quality recycled PP
  • Fabric free from foreign contamination
  • Dustproof stitching optional
  • No mandatory cleanroom manufacturing
  • Suitable for grains, pellets, and powdered feed
  • UV-stabilized and moisture-resistant options available

2. What Is Food Grade?

Food Grade materials are intended for human consumption, including:

  • Flour, sugar, rice, pulses
  • Edible powders
  • Food additives
  • Starches
  • Ingredients used for processing food

Food Grade FIBCs must comply with stringent hygiene and handling protocols to prevent contamination, including GMP, HACCP, and ISO-based controls.

Key Requirements of Food Grade FIBCs

  • Made using 100% virgin polypropylene
  • Manufactured in BRC- or ISO-certified cleanrooms
  • Metal detection, UV screening, and contamination control
  • Lot traceability for every shipment
  • Food-safe liners (PE/LLDPE) are optional
